SIGMA | F1.4 Art lenses
The SIGMA F1.4 DG DN series
Unbeatable expressive performance - lenses for the artist in you
The SIGMA F1.4 DG DN series consists of 7 lenses with unbeatable expressive performance, made exclusively for mirrorless cameras, ranging from 14mm up to 85mm.
F1.4 - more light, less problems
An F1.4 lens gives you flexibility to take pictures in darker environments while keeping a low ISO, which in turn keeps image noise at a lower level. A large aperture of F1.4 also have the benefit of making you able to use faster shutter speeds, thus reducing motion blur and freezing action.
Depth of field also gets narrow with aperture F1.4, enabling you to get rid of disturbing elements in the background and isolate the subject you are taking pictures of.
Typically, an F1.4 lens have its sweet spot between aperture F2.8 to F4, while an F4 lens would typically have the sweet spot at F8 to F11. This means you can use a larger sweet spot aperture than other lenses with slower aperture.

Build quality and size
The F1.4 DG DN Art series consists of 7 lenses (as of September 2024), ranging from 14mm to 85mm. They all have the build quality that have become one of the trademarks of the Art series. Along with dust and splash resistant structure, the lenses are made of materials like aluminum and TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) where they are best suited. The front lens element is coated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to make the front easier to keep clean. All lenses have a durable and rugged brass bayonet mount. The brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction. Its treated surfaces and enhanced strength contribute to the exceptional durability of the lenses.

The lenses are made exclusively for mirrorless cameras. Therefore, by making the most of the in-camera aberration correction functionalities, SIGMA was able to concentrate on the correction of aberration that could be handled by the optical system alone, which contributed to making the lens smaller in size. All F1.4 DG DN | A lenses have been developed with focus on slimming down the lens barrel by reducing the weight of the focus lens and optimizing the lens unit layout. The combination of all these elements results in lenses that are as small and lightweight as possible without compromising the optical performance.
Exclusive low-dispersion glass
The degree to which light is refracted by glass depends on the light’s wavelength. This fact causes different colors of light to focus at slightly different points. The result is chromatic aberration, the color fringing that is particularly noticeable in telephoto lenses. Most chromatic aberration can be removed by combining a high-refractivity convex lens element with a low-refractivity concave element. Yet residual chromatic aberration known as “secondary spectrum” may still remain. To minimize this secondary spectrum, which can be a serious issue with conventional lenses, SIGMA lenses feature up to three types of exclusive low-dispersion glass offering superior performance: ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion), SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and FLD (“F” Low Dispersion). In particular, FLD glass offers ultra-low dispersion in combination with high transmittance and the anomalous dispersion characteristics of fluorite. Meticulous deployment of these types of exclusive low-dispersion glass and optimization of power distribution gives SIGMA lenses superlative image rendition undiminished by residual chromatic aberration.

Autofocus
All lenses come with a fast and accurate autofocus and have reliable communication with the camera body. The AF motor system employs a stepping motor which is optimized for both phase detection AF and contrast AF. Not only does this provide a smooth shooting experience only possible with a mirrorless camera, such as face/eye detection AF, but it has also made the lens body itself much smaller, as the focus lens has been made small to better suit a stepping motor. The 14mm F1.4 DG DN | A makes use of the HLA, SIGMA’s proprietary linear motor, a motor that drives the focus directly without going through gears, resulting in quiet high-precision autofocusing, even when large amount of glass needs to be shifted.
Other features
To make the operation of the lenses intuitive and effortless, they all have several beneficial features. An AFL button that can be assigned with various function widens the range of operations, an aperture ring and aperture ring lock switch to prevent unintended movement of aperture ring during shooting, and an aperture ring click switch for removing clicks by the aperture ring enabling seamless operations that are especially useful during video shooting.
The three lenses especially made for astrophotography, the 14mm F1.4 DG DN | Art, 15mm F1.4 DG DN Diagonal Fisheye | Art, and the 20mm F1.4 DG DN | Art comes with a Manual Focus Lock switch. This switch allows for the focus to be locked at the desired position and prevents unintended movement of the focus ring during shooting. These two lenses also come fitted with a rear filter slot enabling the use of gel-type filters.

Made in Japan craftmanship
Apart from a handful of processes, we perform all manufacturing in house at our Aizu factory in Fukushima Prefecture. This includes grinding lenses, molding plastic parts, painting, mounting substrates, assembly, manufacturing screws and other parts, and machining molds. Thanks to this integrated production system, we are now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are truly "Made in Japan."
